Gavin scratched his head, idly wondering what his father would tell him right about then. Probably steal the slave and run. Father's solution was always to steal and run. But he had a job to finish. " All right, " he said finally, "here's what we'll do. We'll pretend this night didn't happen." That earned another sarcastic look. Suzanna J. Linton
About This Quote

In the scene above from Shakespeare In Love, William Shakespeare is writing a play about a woman in love with a man who's been promised to another woman. The man's brother, Gavin MacBeth, wants to stop it from being performed. In order for Gavin MacBeth to stop the play from being performed by William Shakespeare, he needs to convince his father, King Duncan, to take back his promise and cancel the marriage. However, when he tries to explain it to his father in a calm voice, his father gets angry and says that he is going to pretend this night didn't happen.

He then does something that shocks both himself and his son: he rapes Lady MacBeth. This is a very dramatic scene that reveals the flaws within the characters of both men.
